A care home in Colinton got a bird’s eye view when it took part in this year’s RSPB Big Garden birdwatch.

Residents from Care UK’s Cairdean House on Redford Road were joined by students from Bonaly Primary School for the world’s largest wildlife survey.

The home invited the school to join residents for a talk led by a local RSPB center. The RSPB officer offered advice on the best ways to attract wildlife into the garden and the different species to look out for in the local area. The students then accompanied the residents into the care home’s garden to look out for feathered friends flying in for a visit.

The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch encourages people throughout the UK to take a closer look at the nature on their doorsteps by counting the different birds, as well as recording any non-bird species such as badgers and hedgehogs, which visit their garden in any one hour. The birdwatch took place over the last weekend in January.
Home manager at Cairdean House, Michelle Reid, said: “We are always looking to plan interesting and exciting activities for residents and, as so many have a keen interest in nature and wildlife, we couldn’t wait to get stuck in with the birdwatch.
“The weekend proved to be a real success, and you could see from residents’ reactions just how much they enjoyed spending time outdoors, viewing the birds and listening to the RSPB talk. Birdwatching is something that can be enjoyed by all, irrespective of age, so it was wonderful to be joined by Bonaly Primary School for the event.”
